I have had many moments in my life where I found myself in my overactive imagination standing on a cliff. The size of the cliff depended on how big the possible leap was going to be. I do know that life will kick me in the backside of that cliff. I have found myself grasping at nothing but air and wondering where the screaming was coming from. So this is how Wiley Coyote felt. Those are the days I feel a little sorry for him. At that moment, I have to hope the kick was hard enough to miss the rocks below. I have no control over when I get thrown off, but I do have control over whether I sink or swim.
There are times when I am not forced off the cliff but decide to dive off. I have, however, encountered times in my life where it was better not to make the dive. When it comes to a cliff decision, I sit on that cliff and weigh my options. I learned from days in school to make a pros and cons list. I have to look at my list and decide. Do the pros outweigh the cons. Do I want to take the risk no matter the outcome? Information is power. I do the research and gather as many facts as I can. That also applies when dealing with professionals. I consult professionals to help collect information when needed, but the ultimate decision is mine.
No matter what brings me to the cliff, there comes a time that I have to decide whether to dive off or not. Sometimes I find I don’t have all that I need to make a beautiful swan dive. Once I have made my decision, I put everything into it. Half-hearted commitments have landed me on the rocks below. And just like it sounds, it is a painful experience. Since I am the one who is reaping the benefits or suffering the consequences, I have to be willing to accept the responsibility.
Spend time on your cliff. Feel the wind, sun, and sea below. Sometimes you will have to wait out the whole storm but always remember, the eye of the storm is calm. So you might get a second wave once it has passed. When the time is right, make a running start and enjoy the view on the way down. Then you swim.
